I am the resident therapist at The Tinnitus Clinic, London. I work with clients experiencing acute anxiety and depression, as a result of a sudden onset of tinnitus perception. Tinnitus is the involuntary perception of sound, that is localised to within the ears or head, which may also be accompanied by hearing loss / sound sensitivity. Sufferers of Tinnitus may experience ringing, buzzing, whistling or pulsing which can cause a variety of negative symptoms including difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping and anxiety. These symptoms have a knock-on effect in everyday life with adverse effects to a patient’s social, work and home lives. My clients are referred for the very reason that Tinnitus is having a severe impact on their mental health and lives in general. I work in collaboration with the audiology team. As my method of therapy progressed distinctive patterns began to emerge that stretched beyond a cognitive behavioural approach to managing anxiety and crisis (triggered by Tinnitus), to a more psychodynamic exploration of the potential roots of the anxiety that exacerbate Tinnitus symptoms and impacts overall well being. My philosophy of Tinnitus offers clients the opportunity to creatively explore their Tinnitus and the role it plays as an internal satellite navigational tool to self-knowledge, bringing into conscious awareness patterns of behaving, unhealthy situations, self-limiting 8belief systems that are restricting and disempowering.
Client feedback ‘I am also very pleased to have been able to attend counselling sessions with the excellent Julianne Mullen – her quiet reassurance and guidance has been very helpful.’
I provide 1:1 therapy sessions as well as skype/face time sessions. I also provide consultation for audiologists and ENT surgeons on managing distressed patients with acute Tinnitus perception.
